Let's Engrishing!

Over the last few months I've collected even more Engrish and have recently updated my Engrish photo gallery***. Some recent additions include a clothing store named "Skank," a hair place that advertises that they do "Dead Rocks," a "Love Love Sand(which)" and a "Let's play exciting!" pachinko advertisement. Oh, and who can forget the wonderful poster ad for hostesses (aka call girls) I recently discovered. It depicts school girl/call girl cartoons... the pictures explain the rest, sort of...

Throw an Egg on It

So I was walking past a place in Sapporo station called Lotteria. Lotteria isn't a place to buy lottery tickets, however - it's a fast food burger chain throughout Japan.

Each morning when I'm headed to the regional train to Shinoro Jr. High I pass this place and there's some poor soul dressed up in a wacky uniform outside at a cart with a siren light on it, trying to get people to come in. She wails the same phrase in female-high-pitched Japanese all day. Even when I get back to the stationa round 4:30PM, she's still standing out there, doing the same boring job...

Anyway, guess how you spruce up almost any food in Japan? Throw an egg on it!

Yes, they put a fried egg on top of nearly everything here. So when I saw this nasty-looking poster of an "egg burger" with the word "Love", I just had to snap a photo and add it to the Engrish collection. Hope you find this a weird and unappetizing as I do....

Engrish! (and other wacky stuff)

It's everywhere! And it's a cultural phenomenon that keeps me smiling and laughing in this country every day. Engrish can be broadly defined as Japanese misuse (and misspelling) of the English language. It involves picking words that make no sense in English and attaching them to Japanese products, apparel or advertising. Often times the words they choose are hilarious when you know the meaning of the words in English. Also the context is usually waaaaay off too.

Take for instance a popular snack food called "Collon." There's also a Tic-Tac-type of candy called "Titliss." And then there's a sports drink called "Pocari Sweat." The list goes on and on and on, so I've created a special photo and multimedia gallery called Engrish! which will display these fabulous finds.

I have a decent camera phone with me at all times, so I keep my eyes peeled for any Engrish and also record any annoying supermarket songs whenever I hear them.

This gallery will be the "Supa-Wilda-Crazy-Fun-Time!" part of this blog, so be sure to check the Engrish gallery often! Whenever I find something new or add something, I'll post a reminder.
